Strategos

Strategos
Governor of a theme (q.v.), whose duties, like those of the exarchs of Carthage and Ravenna (qq.v.), were primarily military. The strategoi of major themes (q.v.), e.g., Opsikion and Anatolikon (qq.v.), were frequent contenders for imperial power in the eighth century, resulting in the division of themes into smaller units in the ninth century. Bardanes Tourkos (q.v.) was monostrategos of five themes in Asia Minor (q.v.) when he rebelled against Nikephoros I (q.v.). In the 11th century, as themes declined, the power of the strategos declined in favor of the praitor, doux, and katepano (qq.v.).
